He served in the U.S. Army, in W.W.I. He entered the Army on Sept. 15, 1917, while married to Della Pearl. He is listed in the Tippecanoe County Honor Roll book and may be found at the Tippecanoe Co Library, in Lafayette, IN.

He remarried to Anna Billhartz, May 26, 1920, in Kentucky.
Within a couple weeks, June 3, 1920, of this marriage, his first wife, Della Pearl, shot him in a rage, turning the gun on herself, but did not succeed in killing either of them, but he succombed to the shooting soon after; attending him was Dr. Arnett, June 29, 1920.
