MRS. KATHERINE HARRIS IS DEAD
ON CHRISTMAS DAY SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN 90.
She Made Her Home With Mrs. Eva Dorey and Mrs. Raymond Streeter.
Mrs. Katherine Harris, 89, a resident of Fort Scott for the past 35 years, passed away last evening at 5 o'clock at the Burke Street hospital, where she was taken two weeks ago today.
Mrs. Harris was taken seriously ill on Thanksgiving Day, and for a week was cared for at her home by her granddaughters, Mrs. Eva Dorey and Mrs. Raymond Streeter, but when she became worse it was necessary to take her to the hospital.
Mrs. Harris was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Grogan and was born in Ireland on December 25, 1847. Had she lived until Christmas Day she would have been 90 years of age.
Mrs. Harris' parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Grogan, came from Ireland to America in 1848, leaving Mrs. Harris, who was then only nine months old and her brother in Ireland. Because of the "Poor Act" in Ireland. Mr. and Mrs. Grogan left their native land, coming to the United States and landing at New Orleans. A few years later, when a very small child, she came with her brother to the United States, joining her father and mother in Leon, Ia., where they had settled at that time.
She was united in marriage on August 28, 1866, and came to Kansas about 45 years ago, where she had lived since. After the death of her husband she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. P.E. Hallowell, until Mrs. Hallowell's death, February 3, 1935. Since that time she had been living with her granddaughters, Mrs. Eva Dorey and Mrs. Streeter, of 201 North Judson street, who have given her very devoted care.
Her husband, who served the entire four years of the Civil war, was killed on July 4, 1883, by a train, and left Mrs. Harris with a family of four children. They are J.R. Harris, who is in the Main Street hospital with a broken hip; W.E. (Bentley) Harris, of Fort Scott; Mrs. P.E. Hallowell, who passed away in 1935; and another daughter, Mrs. C.F. Chase, who passed away in 1898. Two children died in Infancy.
Mrs. Harris leaves eight grandchildren: Mrs. Eva Dorey, Clarence Jones of Pittsburg, Mrs. Harold Moore, Miss Jennie Harris of Fort Scott, Mrs. Floyd King of Denver, Mrs. L.C. Jackson of Fort Scott, Mrs. Raymond Streeter and Mrs. Josephine Erickson of Fort Scott. She also leaves nine great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. P.F. Bradley of Leon, Ia., and Mrs. Mary McGraw of Geneva, neb. Two nieces, the Misses Mida and Mable Bradley, are both teachers of music in the Chicago schools.
The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Konantz chapel and will be conducted by the Rev. B.W. Young, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Interment will take place in the Hart vault in the Evergreen cemetery.
The body will be taken to the home tomorrow morning and will remain there until the time of the funeral service.

The funeral of Mrs. Catherine Harris, a pioneer resident of Fort Scott, was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Konantz chapel, which was filled to overflowing by relatives, friends and neighbors.
The services were conducted by the Rev. B.W. Young, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and were very impressive. Mr. Young selected passages of scripture and offered a comforting prayer. He took as his subject "Faith, Love and Truth," and quoted Apostle Paul: "We walk by faith and not by sight." So it was in the life of Mrs. Harris, he said, who for 90 years walked with courage and faith, her two greatest attributes, bringing to a close a life of glorious living.
The minister said the days of our youth were four score and ten, but Mrs. Harris had surpassed this by many years. The strength of her body even after she had lived all this time was not comparable to the strength of her mind and soul. In paying a tribute he said Mrs. Harris always had a smile, symbolic of true measure of courage and perseverance. She had the faith, loved God and His commandments. These were part of the life that sustained her. He closed with Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar" and a prayer.
There was no vocal music. Mrs. Alta Bates played at the organ "Abide With Me," "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
There were many beautiful floral tributes, the alcove being completely covered with tokens of sympathy, including a casket block of mums inscribed "Mother" and a pretty corsage of pink roses inscribed "Grandmother." Other pieces included those from Olive chapter No. 13, city officials, police and water departments, Eagles lodge, girls of the Home Lunch, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen No. 17, Mary and Martha class of the Church of God, grandchildren at Colorado Springs and a beautiful basket from North Judson street neighbors.
Interment was made in the Hart vault at Evergreen cemetery beside the daughter, Mrs. Hallowell. The pallbearers were Ed White, P. Hallowell, L.C. Jackson, Ray Streeter, Clarence Jones and Freeman Martin.
A son, Jack Harris, in the hospital, was unable to attend.
