Chesapeake - Dorothy L. Baril, 84, was called to be with the Lord March 23, 2012. Mrs. Baril was born in Monroe, N.C. to the late Earl and Bernir Kizeah Helms. She worked at Sears Roebuck for 20 years advising women on fashion. She enjoyed sewing, and was a master gardener. She, with the love of her life, the late Raymond A. Baril, moved to Walnut Island in Grandy, N.C. Many a day they entertained family and friends in their little paradise by the water. She especially enjoyed having her grandchildren around the campfire, fishing, and boating. Her yard was the jewel of the neighborhood, with beautiful flowers, groomed by her own hands. Dot was a "serial" remodeler, occasionally taking down walls in her home, much to the surprise of her husband. She was always upbeat, and the cheerleader of the family. She was predeceased by her son, Kenneth Lovelace, brother, Earl Helms and sister, Frances Morris.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Wanda L. Thomas and husband Tom of Chesapeake and Julia A. Pratt and husband, Jim of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 929 Battlefield Blvd, S, Chesapeake, VA 23322 on Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Moyock Memorial Cemetery, Moyock, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc (www.alz.org). or the American Heart Association (www.heart.org) .
