Prof Burks was known by several names including "Bill" "Billly" "Uncle Billy" "B" "S.V." "Victor," and "Professor." Known as "Prof Burks" around Poteet, he served as school superintendent there from 1922 to 1937.
It was a twist of fate that landed the Burks Family in Poteet. At the recommendation of the family doctor, they had been en route to Arizona, hoping that the drier climate would relieve Mr. Burks' respiratory issues. They were intercepted in Texas by Dr. Chester C. Schotts, Sr., a long time friend of the family from their native Mississippi. Dr. Schotts convinced Mr. Burks to take the job in Poteet.
During his tenure at Poteet he made time to receive his college degree in Agriculture, then a Masters Degree in Educational Administration. This eventually led to an offer by Texas A&I to teach Agricultural Education, which he accepted in 1937. He continued with dual roles at A&I and Poteet until 1939, then moved his family to Kingsville. Changing careers in 1961, he began new endeavors at Kingsville First Savings and Loan in Kingsville. Earlier, he had organized and helped charter the organization.
Prof Burks finally retired in 1965, eventually moving to Sulphur, La. to live with his wife, Alice, at the home of their son and daughter in law.
Wherever he went Prof Burks earned the respect and affection of not only his students, but the local townsfolk as well. Many were his selfless contributions to those around him.
