Mr. John F. Ficklen was born in Washington county, Ga., in 1844. When the late war broke out, he entered the Confederate army at the early age of 16, serving three years, when he was so severely wounded that he was discharged from the service. He returned to his old Georgia home, and in 1886 emigrated to Texas, settling in Eagle Lake, and entered into the service of what was then known as the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio railway. After severing his connection with this company he entered into commercial pursuits, which, in connection with planting, he has since continued.
