Stephen G. Boyett, 69, a retired Navy commander, drowned accidentally Saturday.

He was born in Albermarle, N.C., a son of John Madison and Faye Miller Boyett, and graduated from Albermarle High School in 1947, Pfeiffer Junior College in 1949 and from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. He received a master's degree in business from New Hampshire College in 1981.

Cmdr. Boyett completed flight training and was designated a naval aviator in November 1954. He assumed command of Patrol Squadron 11 at Brunswick Naval Air Station in June 1970. He later served as executive officer of Naval Air Facility, Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. He became the administrative officer at BNAS in August 1974 and retired as the station's executive officer in June 1979. He was the recipient of several military medals and awards, including the Bronze Star for action in Vietnam.

After his retirement, he was employed at Bath-Brunswick Mental Health and assisted in the development of employee assistance programs in Maine. He also was employed as a student adviser at New Hampshire College.

He has been a lobsterman for several years and was a member of the Maine Lobsterman's Association. He was awarded the Joshua Chamberlain Award by the Brunswick Area Chamber of Commerce.

Cmdr. Boyett was married to Dorothy Canup in Salisbury, N.C., June 14, 1953.

Surviving are his wife of East Harpswell; a son, Michael of Murrieta, Calif.; two daughters, Laura Boyett of Augusta and Mrs. Larry (Lynn) Haynes of Salisbury, N.C., and two grandchildren, Stephen Patrick Boyettand Tiffany Lee Boyett, both of Murrieta, Calif.
