John was the son of Andrew Othaniel Bacus (1810-1898) and Rebecca Nevin (1812-1836).
He married to Susan Ann Carter on January 1, 1857, in Wapello County, Iowa, probably near Ottumwa. They are listed as Bachus in the 1870 census of Appanoose County, Iowa, and soon after left for Idaho.
He married 2nd on September 5, 1872, Ada County, Idaho, to Harriet Yaryan.
