Elena Ávila, age 66, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Elena was born in El Paso, Texas on May 24, 1944.
Elena received her Bachelors in Nursing in 1976, and went on to get her MSN in Psychiatric Nursing in 1981. Her strong desire to help people lead her on a fulfilling road to becoming a curandera and spiritual counselor. Elena inspired people with her lectures all over the world and touched people's lives wherever she went. Her published book, "Women Who Glows in the Dark," was a national bestseller and a true testament to the work she loved. Her poetry came from "a flowering need to express the deepest feelings of her soul." The plays she wrote and performed in demonstrated her passion for life. Elena shared her compassionate and loving spirit with all that knew her, and she will be remembered for her joyful laughter and beautiful smile.
Elena is survived by her four children, Jamie Ávila (Susan), Sondra Skory (John), Abel Ávila (Pam) and Adrian Ávila and her greatest joys, her seven grandchildren, Katie Ávila, Samantha Skory, Noah Skory, Andre Ávila, Hannah Ávila, Mia Ávila and Ryan Ávila. Elena is also survived by one brother, Sergio Martínez and three sisters, Irma Martínez, Rosario Martínez and Marta Gorges.
Rosary, followed by a celebration of her life will be held on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at French, Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Road NW. Mass will be on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, 5712 Paradise Blvd. NW. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd. NE.
Elena will be dearly missed by her family and many friends, and she will forever be in our hearts.
