Mrs. Jean Ann Backus, 68, formerly of Bayley Road passed away Thursday afternoon, May 3, at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since December 15, 2005.

Jean was born September 26, 1943 in Malone, the daughter of Frances Cook Dunn and the late Elmer Dunn. She attended country schools in Ellenburg Center. A marriage to Lynn Backus ended in divorce.

Jean was a homemaker and devoted mother to her three sons. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, and doing ceramics. She also enjoyed following her children's activities and camping with them.

She is survived by her mother, Frances Dunn of Ellenburg Center; her three sons, Alan and Ann Backus of Harbor Beach, Michigan; Mike and Rod Backus, both of Ellenburg Center; her grandson, Paul Backus of Harbor Beach, Michigan; a great grandson, Jack Backus; and two sisters, Judy Dunn and Mae and John Gregory, all of Ellenburg Center.

She was predeceased by her father, Elmer; a grandson, Brian Backus, who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2011; and her brother, Gary Dunn.

Friends may call Monday 5 to 7 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, 100 N. Main Street, Massena. A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday 10 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Ellenburg Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Regis Nursing Home Activities Fund, 89 Grove Street, Massena, NY 13662.
