Rev. Charles J. Ring, 61, of the Priests of the Sacred Stigmata, died Saturday in Youville Hospital in Cambridge after a long struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
A teacher, counselor and licensed theologian, Father Ring directed Cursillo - weekend retreats during which individuals pursue intensive courses in personal Christianity - and encounter programs for thousands of people.
He and a friend, Rev. Nicholas Spagnolo, were counselors in the Life Options Associates of Lexington until illness required Father Ring's hospitalization in July 1985.
Born in Boston and raised in Dorchester, Father Ring graduated from the old High School of Commerce in 1941 and entered the seminary at the Stigmatine House of Studies in Waltham. He was ordained in Sacred Heart Church in South Natick on June 9, 1951.
He earned a master's degree in history from Boston College. In 1952, he received a License of Sacred Theology from the University of St. Thomas (Angelicun) in Rome, and a Licentia in Sacred Scripture degree from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, also in Rome.
From 1957 until 1864 he taught at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and, from 1964 until 1976, he was director of the Espousal Retreat House in Waltham.
Father Ring was a co-pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Milford in 1976.
He taught religious studies at Regis College in Weston from 1968 until 1980.
Fr. Ring leaves a sister in law, a nephew, 3 nieces and an aunt.
