It is said that Curtis was injured as a child when kicked by mule. WWI draft record states exemption because of mental disability as well as having the first and fourth fingers off of his left hand. (Another accident, perhaps.) The draft card also shows his date of birth as May 10, 1888 and states that he was born in Hargrave (which is in Rush County, Kansas), and he lived at the time in Ohio Township, Stafford County, Kansas. The registrar is Charles Kirkpatrick who may have signed his name. (This writer knew Kirkpatrick but is not a handwriting expert.) His WWII draft record also shows him living in Ohio Township where he is a self-employed farmer. This document states his date of birth as May 6, 1888 in Rush County and listed his sister Juanita Soice of Stafford, Kansas, as someone who will always know where he is. The registrar signs his name, followed by O.E. Essex.
