Edna Rouse Bowman, 82, died Sunday, May 9, 1999. She was a native of Seagate, N.C., and had been a Peninsula resident since 1939. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Edwin Bowman.
Mrs. Bowman was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church, a member of the Agape Sunday School Class, was a former adult Sunday school teacher and held many offices in the mission groups, including serving as former director of the WMU. She was involved with widowed persons groups of the church and the Peninsula. Many years ago, she initiated the family night suppers and was involved with them until recently. She was a world traveler. In 1987, she served several months as lay missionary at the Baptist Mission in Tanzania, Africa. She was supportive of Youth Challenge and, until recently, volunteered at the International Seamen's Friend House.
Survivors include one daughter, Janice B. Tolford, and her husband, John, of Springfield; two sons, Dr. William E. Bowman Jr., and his wife, Lindy, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and Bob Bowman, and his wife, Shelly, of Ruthville; four sisters, Grace Pritchett and Vera Stair of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Irene Jolliffe of Williamsburg and Virginia Rebert of Westminister, Md.; and five grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Louise Rouse of Fayetteville, N.C., and Marie Bowman of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Thursday, May 13, in the fellowship hall of North Riverside Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Dr. John S. Carpenter Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
