Joan Marie Abel was born in 1927, in Plains, PA, to Stephanie and Ignatz Walling, the eighth of ten children. She moved to Bayonne, NJ, attending Holy Family Academy and Fordham University.

Joan married Paul F. Abel, a 1948 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who eventually retired as a Commander, and traveled with him throughout his career as a Naval Aviator. She became an accomplished Navy wife - eager to explore, able to adapt and make a home anywhere the Navy took them. Always a gracious hostess, her family and friends will forever remember her passion for cooking and art.

Joan was a member of the National League of American Pen Women for her painting, the Questors and the USNA Alumni Association.

Joan Marie Abel died at her home in Annapolis, MD, on July 21, 2011.

She was preceded in death in 2003 by her beloved husband, Commander Paul F. Abel, USN (Ret.) She is survived by her sister, Germaine Williams of Seal Beach, CA; daughter, Carol A. Francisco and her husband Cmdr. Roger B. Francisco, USN (Ret.) of Williamsburg, VA; son, COL Paul F. Abel Jr., USA (Ret.) and his wife Begzada O. Abel of Wiesbaden, Germany; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
