Scottish Monarch. The subject of one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays, though the events in the play bore little resemblance to historical fact, he was the son of Findlaech, Earl of Moray, and Doneda, daughter of Malcolm II. He acceded after defeating and killing Duncan I in battle in 1040. He married Gruoch, a granddaughter of Kenneth III. His 17-year reign was for the most part one of peace and prosperity, and he was known to be generous to the church. His reign was so secure, he was able to make a pilgrimage to Rome in 1050, which was no small feat. However, seven years later, Malcolm Ceann-Mor, son of Duncan I, returned from exile in England and murdered MacBeth in battle in revenge for his father's death. Incidentally, MacBeth was killed on the anniversary of the murder of Duncan.
