Evelyn Katherine Antoinette (Gast) Bjerke was born March 2, 1915, at Holmquist, South Dakota, to Herman C. and Laura Antoinette Marie (Huber) Gast. She graduated from high school in Webster, South Dakota. Evelyn worked as a clerk for Hammers Store in Volga from 1936 until 1943. On March 26, 1944, she married Benford Bob Bjerke at Colman, South Dakota. Evelyn and Bob farmed in Oslo Township until moving into Volga in 1971. She served as the postmaster in Volga from 1961 until 1983. Bob died March 22, 1995.
Evelyn was active in her church and community. She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings, the Catholic Daughters, and St. Thomas More Guild. She was involved in extension club and a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. She served as the secretary for six years for the Volga Chamber of Commerce and as secretary-treasurer for the Brookings County Farmers Union. She was active at the local, state, and national levels of the Democratic Party.
Evelyn is survived by a brother, Herbert (Beryl) Gast of Wasilla, Alaska, and nieces and nephews.
