The oldest house in White County is in the Shoal Creek area near the Lumpkin County line. The house was built around 1780, according to records, by a Dr. Joseph E. Murdock. It is made of forest pine, hand-planed boards inside and out. The main joists are put together with wooden pegs. The hinges on the doors are hand wrought. At one end of the 10-room house is a mud chinked rock chimney. The vines flanking the porch on the front of the house have been here 100 years or more. The house has seen a few changes but, for the most part, is still the same as when it was built 200 years ago. Dr. Murdock died February 10, 1828. The house was purchased by William Henry Smith around 1890. He and his widow, Nancy Jane (Reece) Smith occupied the house until 1918. It was purchased by Cornelius C. Thomas in 1926.
