Hazel Custer, longtime resident of St. Peter, Minnesota, passed away on April 14 at the age of 91.
Born on January 17, 1921, in Le Sueur County, Hazel was the beloved daughter of Herman and Martha Schuler. After graduating from Cleveland High School, she graduated from St. Lucas Nursing School in Faribault and later from Mankato State University. Hazel was employed as a nurse in Chicago, Minneapolis, and the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. Ensign Hazel Adelheid Schuler also served proudly in the Navy from 1944 to 1946.
Hazel was a courageous, progressive, independent woman. She loved her family and guided and supported them with quiet strength. Along with raising her own five children, her home was always open to those who needed a family. She enjoyed crocheting, walking, swimming, traveling, and was a lifelong learner. She spent much of her life caring for others through her nursing career and provided loving care to her brother Ralph for many years.
She is survived by four grateful children, Craig Custer and wife Karen of Houston, Texas, Cathy Meave and husband Bernard, of Huffman, Texas, Cristeen Custer and husband Craig Nilsson of Galesville, Wisconsin, and Camille Custer Hurtado of Bemidji, Minnesota. She is also survived by five loving grandchildren, Rachel Mines Drake and husband Benjamin, Jacob Mines and wife Becky, Nikki Custer, Taylor Meave, and Casey Custer. She is further survived by two great grandchildren, Harper Drake and Daniel Mines and three nephews, Melvin and wife Leanne Schmidt of Janesville, Stanley Schmidt of Owatonna, and Russell Schmidt of Cleveland. Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved son Curt Custer, her sister and brother-in-law, Ella and Nylen Schmidt, her brother Ralph Schuler, and her son-in-law, Dan Mines.
