Helen Toomer Jennings was born March 19,1854, daughter of David Jennings born 1817 & Harleston S. Toomer born 1825. She married James Ancrum Simons on June 5, 1877 in Charleston, South Carolina, they had 8 children. The family name was changed somewhere between 1896 & 1900 from Simons to Ballantyne. She was widowed in 1898, and kept the family together by catering weddings, taking in boarders and sewing for children, she did beautiful handwork. She died in Oakland , California, while visiting her youngest son, Lyman, but was buried in Tacoma, Washington where she lived.
