He is probably the Thomas Barnes, b. 10 July 1752, in Upton, Massachusetts, the son of John and Elizabeth Barnes. His sister, married Benjamin Dyer, and also came to Townshend, VT. She and her husband are also buried in Wiswell Cemetery.

Thomas Barnes was a Revolutionary War soldier. He served from April 1781 to Nov. 1781 as a private under Capt. Josiah Fish, and Col Samuel Fletcher. His widow applied for a pension, based on his service. She was Anna Ober, and in her application she stated that she married Thomas Barnes 11 June 1778 in Townshend, VT. Ezra Ober of Townshend, VT was her brother. She had two other husbands, who were both deceased. Other local people who gave affidavits in support of her application were: Samuel Wiswell, Amos Gray and Pardon Dunton.

He and his wife Anna had a daughter, Joanna Barnes, who married Edward White, Jr. Joanna and Edward White are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Townshend, VT. Edwards parents are buried in Wiswell Cemetery.

A son of Thomas and Anna was Hiram Barnes, who was born 29 Jan. 1804 in Townshend. He married Polly Jackson, 08 April 1829, in Newfane, VT. They lived in Townshend, for a while, then moved to Rensselaer County, NY. A couple of their children are buried in Wiswell Cemetery.
