David Wendell JAMES was born 24 Aug 1910 in Spanish Fork, Utah, Ut, son of David Hopla James and Mary Ann Sorensen James. David Wendell James, 83, died October 19, 1993 at his home in Spanish Fork, Utah from natural causes and was buried 21 Oct 1993 in Spanish Fork, Utah, UT. He married Ruby Eleanor Dedrickson on June 20, 1928 in Spanish Fork, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in 1945. She passed away on September 20, 1990.
He was educated in Spanish Fork schools and graduated from Spanish Fork High School. He was a butcher, rancher, farmer, and cattleman. He was a charter member of the Spanish Fork Lions Club. He attended Spanish Fork Senior Citizens. He was a member of the LDS Church, served as home teacher, also in the Sunday School superintendency, and as ward financial clerk.
[by his son, Sherald] My father had been a butcher during most of his life. He received his training under the able tutelage of Quayle Dixon having spent many years in his service.
I remember quite vividly one of the experiences my father had while working as a butcher. Mr. Dixon was boning out a quarter of beef. The technique for boning out beef involves drawing the knife towards the body while standing off to one side in the case the knife slips. Evidently Mr. Dixon was in a hurry that day and wasn't quite as careful as he should have been. The knife slipped from the meat and ripped into his lower abdomen, opening up a large gash where his appendix was located. The intestines were already protruding out of the cut so my father had to hold them back into the body cavity until they could get to a doctor.
Upon examining the wound the doctor decided that he had done such a fine job of operating on himself they should just go ahead and remove his appendix. After the operation they sent him home to recuperate.
After working for Mr. Dixon, my father worked for the Spanish Fork Co-op, one of the major stores in town. He also worked there as a butcher and eventually took over the business himself. I often worked after school and on weekends with him and picked up the skills meat cutter.
My senior year in college my grandfather died, leaving his farm to my father and uncle. My uncle decided to get out of the farming business so I coaxed my father into letting me buy my uncle's half of the farm. Since then my father and I have run the thirty eight acre farm as well as keeping busy with our individual occupations. Recently, my father retired as a butcher and spend much of his time at the farm.
Survivors include one son and one daughter: Sherald Wendell James and Janice Fillmore, both of Spanish Fork; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Duane (LuAnn) Jones; a brother and a sister, John James and Donna Harmer.
