Jerry Powell of Cottage Grove died April 27 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 61.

Powell was born Dec. 14, 1942, in Yuma, Ariz., to Wallace and Dixie Baskett Powell. He married Melanie Parkton in Cottage Grove on June 30, 1979.

He lived in Yuma until 1976, when he settled in Cottage Grove.

He attended Lane Community College for a year. He worked as a diesel mechanic and as a truck driver for Blackburn Trucking and Stafek and Sons Trucking. He also owned and operated Powell and Spouse trucking. He received numerous safe driving awards.

His interests included dune buggies, diesel truck racing and NHRA dragsters.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Richard of Gridley, Calif., J.B. of Marysville, Calif., and Malcom of Cottage Grove; a daughter, Patricia Holcomb of Kalispell, Mont.; four sisters, Pauline Heeter, Odie Badilla, Mary Madrigal and Norma Gastlum, all of Yuma; a bother, James of Salem; and 16 grandchildren.
