Abraham H Preble & Eglantine F Turner, both of Whitefield, filed marriage intentions Dec 1, 1854 two years after Eglantine's father, Samuel B. Turner, died in California after a brief stint at mining gold. Sometime after their marriage, they spent 3 years in the South where he worked as a daguerrotypist before they eventually moved back to the Preble homestead in Whitefield where his father and mother still lived.

In 1862 at the age of 37 Abraham (son) enlisted as a 1st Lt. in the 21st ME Infantry for 9 months. On August 25, 1863 he was honorably discharged in Augusta. During his 9-month absence his father, also called Abraham, had died. The following year, 1864, the Preble homestead burned. In the meantime they moved to another house (perhaps the Turner house on the Townhouse Road). It was not until 1870 that they moved into their newly built house located just north of the original house. They were active in the community, especially in the schools and their church. They moved to CA to be near their son Henry and family in 1897. [Contributor: Whitefield Historical Society # 47663682]
