NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLA. -- Retired Brig. Gen. Eugene V. Elder, 72, of S. Riverside Drive, a former Long Branch, N.J. resident, died here Monday in Fish Memorial Hospital.

Gen. Elder, who was predeceased by his wife, Mrs. Gladys Lund Elder, moved here 15 years ago after retiring from the army in Washington, D.C. He served in the Army 38 years, including service in World Wars I and II and the Korean Conflict.

Gen. Elder was a member of Blue Lodge, F&AM, Washington; The Men's Golf Association of New Smyrna Beach; the Bahia Shrine, Orlando, Fla., and New Jersey Consistory, SPRS, 32d Degree (a Masonic order). He held the Legion of Merit and Army Commendation Ribbon with Pendant.

He leaves a son, Eugene V. Elder Jr., Jefferson, Ind.; two daughters, Mrs. F. H. Hagen, Lexington, Ky., and Mrs. Rosina Caine, Paris, Ky., and two grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Flock Funeral Home, Long Branch, and burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport.
