Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1855, was commissioned an officer in the 1st US Artillery and fought against the Seminoles in Florida. When the Civil War began, he led a militia unit in Indiana but returned to Florida and joined the Confederate military. He served at Shiloh and for which service he was promoted Brigadier General in September, 1862. He also fought at Prairie Grove, Arkansas, Mobile, Alabama and Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he was captured by the Union. After being paroled, he served as artillery chief during the Georgia campaigns of 1864 and supervised the construction of the defensive works along the Chattahoochee River. After the war, he became a faculty member at the University of Mississippi and the University of the South.
