Husband of Ellen Carmichael Middleton Dickinson, and father of five children surviving childhood: Mildred, Ellen, John, Annie Overton, and Gardner Edward Dickinson.
Elected as the fourth mayor of Bainbridge in 1867 after serving 4 years as alderman.
Descended from John Dickinson of Revolutionary fame, from Talbot Co., MD.
He served C.S.A. as major under General Hood.

He came to Bainbridge from Fredericksburg, VA in 1857. Also, from the St. George Episcopal Church there; instrumental in establishing the local Episcopal Church.
