The first Hamilton of this line to be born in Texas. A citizen of the Republic of Texas.

James Thomas Hamilton was born April 10, 1838 in Texas, the youngest child of James and Amy Rice Hamilton, who emigrated to Texas from Tennessee in 1836. James married Melissa in Cass County on July 14, 1858. To this union was born the following children: Punetta Annie, Mary Susie, Jimmie M., William Thomas, Robert Franklin, Sarah Louella, Samuel Preston, Henry Newton, Silas Shaw, and Avie.

James Thomas and Melissa lived in the Center Grove Community in the same house where his parents had lived. His mother Amy, had received a patent from the State of Texas for the land in 1845 and on October 23, 1866 she deeded it to James Thomas "for the love and affection of my son."

James Thomas accumulated many acres of land around the Center Grove Community and gave each of his sons 100 acres when they married. He also, along with his son-in-law, James R. Anderson, deeded the acre of land "for One Dollar" for the Center Grove Baptist Church. He died January 27, 1901.

Stored in the lean-to shed attached to the house where James Thomas and Melissa lived were many articles which were brought to Texas by his parents, including a spinning wheel, ladies side saddle, wooden churn, an old musket, powder horn & rod, and a big wall clock. James Thomas also fell heir to several of the old two-wheel ox carts that his parents and grandfather brought to Texas.
