Alfred Conley Barnes was born in Statesboro on September 29, 1924. He attended Statesboro High School and played on the football team. Scheduled to graduate with the Class of 1943, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in April of that year and was called to active duty prior to the commencement ceremony. After his basic training, he was assigned to an infantry company in the 3rd Marine Division. His first action with the Division came on July 21, 1944 when he took part in the first assault landings aimed at the recapture of Guam. During the night of July 26, he was mortally wounded during an intense Japanese counterattack aimed at dislodging the Marines from the island. After being evacuated to a hospital ship, PFC Barnes succumbed to his wounds on July 27, 1944.
