Faithful church member known as 'lunch lady'
May Louise Bartges, 80, of 307 Maple St., Danville, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born May 24, 1931, in Danville, the daughter of the late Hap and Louise DeMott.
She graduated from Danville High School in 1949, and attended Harrisburg Nursing School. She was employed by the Danville Area School District and was affectionately known as "the lunch lady."
May was a faithful and active member of St. Paul's-Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, was active on various committees and was a member of the Methodist Women. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star where she served as Past Worthy Matron.
May volunteered for many years at Geisinger Medical Center and Thomas Beaver Free Library, both in Danville. She was an avid bowler, bowling with the Midway Senior Bowling League. She enjoyed reading. For the past 16 summers, she enjoyed spending time at Sharbot Lake in Canada. Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family.
She was married for 56 years to the late Randall C. "Randy" Bartges who preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2006. She is survived by one son, Scott A. Bartges, and his wife, Susan, of Riverside; and two daughters: Beth Anne Lynn and her husband, Bill, of Danville; and Pamela Jane Swank and her husband, Mark, of Bethlehem. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Fonda, Travis, Rebecca, Kyle, Ann, Daniel and Jayne. She is also survived by one brother, George Chappell, and his wife, Miriam, of Kingman, Ariz.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services to be held Thursday, April 12, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul's-Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 305 Pine St., Danville, with her son, Scott A. Bartges, officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville. Friends will be received from 10–11:15 a.m. at the church. Eastern Star services will be held at 11:15 a.m.
