Roman Catholic Pope. Born Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele, the sixth of the seven sons, his election changed the course of the Papacy. A modern man of his time. Pope Leo XIII is most remembered for his 1891 encyclical "Rerum Novarum, On the Condition of Labor", which has become universally recognized as the inaugural document of the tradition of Catholic social teaching and the benchmark against which all subsequent documents have been evaluated. He served as Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church from February 20, 1878 to his death in 1903, and his Pontificate of 25 years, 5 months and 1 day was the third longest in modern times. When he died at age 93 he was the oldest Pope in this history of the Roman Catholic Church.
