US Senator. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, enlisting in 1943 and being discharged in 1946. He was elected as a Republican Senator from Texas to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lyndon Baines Johnson, who assumed the office of United States Vice President. John Tower then served from 1961 until 1985. He died in a plane crash near Brunswick, Georgia in 1991.
