Spendthrift nephew of Illinois ex-Governor Richard J Oglesby of Illinois. Accidentally shot himself while hunting rabbits. Was employed at the ranch of J. C. Knowles six miles north of Denver; shot a rabbit and went to retrieve it, laying the gun on the ground. When he picked it up the gun discharged. Came to Colorado about one before; preferred being in the country, thinking that way he could keep the money he would earn as a ranch hand. However, an inveterate gambler, he would lose the money over a faro table. Remains of Oglesby were unclaimed as he was a family outcast and rather wild. Parents and relatives were telegraphed but no response. Eventually a niece in Topeka, Kansas, wrote that she was sorry her uncle was dead and please forward his trunk at the deceased's expense as she did not have funds for funeral or transportation. The inaction of the family has caused considerable comment. No cause was given by the relatives for not giving him a decent burial. Buried in Potter's Field (cemetery section for indigents) at Riverside Cemetery.
