Her maiden name was Gideon, daughter of Lewis Gideon and Julia Magnus. She was born on St. Helena Island on 1 April 1823, she married John William Bovell on St. Helena Island on 5 May 1840.

Julia Helena Bovell was born on St. Helena Island 1 April 1825. She married John W Bovell outside of Western Australia, and traveled here with her husband, 2 servants and 8 children on board the Thoroughly, departing from Hobart, Tasmania 5 February 1860. Her husband had been sent to Western Australia to be the Deputy Commissary General for Perth.
She gave birth to 10 children including:
Luna Elvina Bovell (b. 1853 d. 1866.)
Charles Frederick McKenzie Bovell (b. 1859 d. 1860.)
7 other children (dates and names unknown).
She died of unspecified causes on 15 September 1861.
After her death, the family continued to live in Perth, with one son sent to London in England for his education on board the Gloucester.
On 23 January 1868, 7 years after her death, her husband took the rest of the family and their servants to London onboard the Fitzgerald, and were never recorded to have set foot in Western Australia again.
