James C. Maher, 75, of Joslin Rd., Glendale, died Friday at home. He was the husband of Averill (Young) Maher.
Born in Mapleville, he was a son of the late Patrick and Irene (Ray) Maher.
Mr. Maher was a salesman for the Sperry-Hutchinson Co., Woonsocket, for 20 years before retiring in 1976. He was previously an overseer of weaving for the Schuster Co., Douglas, Mass., for many years. He was a member of the Board of Appeal and Review for the State of Rhode Island Fire Safety, the Burrillville Sewer Commission and the Burrillville Historical and Preservation Society.
He was a representative in the Rhode Island House for two years. He served in the Rhode Island Senate for 18 years before retiring in 1976. He was a past-president of pro-tem of the Rhode Island State Senate. He was founder, and fire chief of the Glendale Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years, and was the fire chief with the most years of service in New England.
Mr. Maher was a former chairman of the Burrillville Board of Estimate. He was a past president of the Burrillville Lions Club, a past president of the Northern Rhode Island Firemen's League, a former member of the Northeast Forest Fire Compact, and a member of the state ambulance coordinating board. He was an honorary member of the Gloucester Light Infantry Unit, and a member of the Burrillville Democratic Town Committee.
Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Prisella Scunza of Glendale; two sisters, Elsie Edmondo of Rockville, Conn., Florence Dwyer of East Hartford, Conn.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Brown Funeral Home, 1496 Victory Highway, Oakland, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Louis Chapel, Victory Highway, Glendale. Burial will be in Slatersville Cemetery, North Smithfield.
