U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator, Utah Governor. He attended Burlington Academy Vermont and was engaged in mercantile pursuits when he moved to Wisconsin, in 1836. There he was one of the founders of Southport, was successful in agricultural pursuits, lumbering and was a member of the Territorial Legislature, (1836-38, 47-48). In 1849, he was elected as a Free-Soiler to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving until 1853. While in office, he also was a delegate to the World’s Peace Convention in Paris, France. In 1855, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1861. After his term, he was elected as a Liberal-Republican the 6th Governor of Utah Territory in 1865 and served he resigned due to poor health in 1869.
