Mattie Vern Gibson Banks passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Hardin Memorial Hospital. She was one of eight sisters and one brother, born to Hop Gibson and Manerva Adams Gibson of Letcher County, KY. All of these women were servants of God. She and her husband, Jeff, moved to Elizabethtown, KY, after World War II, where they made their home until they both passed away. She was a long-time member of Severns Valley Baptist Church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She had many close church friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Russell (Jeff) Edward Banks, Sr.; and her parents, Joseph H. and Minerva Adams Gibson. She was blessed with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews and she loved each and every one. Remaining of her immediate family: her son, Russell E. (Judy) Banks, Jr. of Elizabethtown; her daughter, Mollie Banks of Glasgow; her sister, Virginia Brown of Little Cowan (Walnut Gap), KY her granddaughter, Cherie (Rick) Cothern of Bowling Green; her grandson, Chad (Heather) Banks of Danville; five great-grandchildren, Dakota, Tyler and Joseph Jopes and Benjamin and Nicholas Banks. To many, whom she was not related to, she was still called Aunt Matt and husband was Uncle Jeff. This world was better because this woman walked in it for 95 years. Her life was defined by her enormous capacity for loving others and putting others before herself. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Roger McCurry officiating. Burial will follow at Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Vistation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and continue after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
