Stephen Jewett was the son of Henry Jewett and Elizabeth Gregory, who were both descended from New England colonial ancestry. He went to Watertown Academy and the Cheshire Episcopal Academy, and moved to Minnesota after the Civil War. His grandfather, Stephen Jewett, was rector of the historic old Trinity Church in New Haven, Conn. He became the treasurer of The Bishop Seabury Mission, as well as Shattuck and St. Mary's. He became owner of the real estate and insurance agency, H. A. Scandrett, and then became partners with George A. Weston and made the firm of Weston & Jewett. In 1908, the company moved to its present location and maintains the largest office of its kind in southern Minnesota.
Mr. Jewett was treasurer of The Bishop Seabury Mission and Shattuck School, financial agent of St. Mary's Hall and vice-president of the Security Bank. He joined the Society of the Colonial Wars, State of Minnesota, and became deputy governor. He was also a member of the New York chapter of the Mayflower Society and the Society of the Sons of the Revolution as well as a member and vestryman of the parish of the Good Shepherd. He also held the position of mayor of Faribault for two terms and participated in historical and patriotic subjects.
He made many travels through the northwest, including the Dakotas in the earliest pioneer and frontier days. Many of his objects that he gathered travelling are found for sale by the National Museum of the American Indian in their Collections Search.
