Alexander May was an electrical engineer who did engineering in British held India, where he met and married his wife 27 Apr 1899 at Saidpur, Bengal, India. They had three children, the oldest of whom died in infancy. After several years, he came with her and their two remaining children to San Francisco, California, USA on March 10, 1913, but what happened to him after that is a mystery.

Alexander's parents were Alexander George May and Elizabeth "Elspet" or "Elsie" Mutch. The son, Alexander, born 20 Oct 1877, was the second Alexander born in that family. The first one was born 8 April 1868, but he died in infancy. After that, James and William Young May were born to the family, and finally Alexander George May in 1877. In past times in some ethnic groups, naming another child with the same name as a previous child was a rather common practice.
