Helen was passionate about teaching children, and spent 35years in the Burlington City School System doing so before retiring to travel. She was awarded Teacher of the Year honors numerous times. She also loved gardening and working on her miniature houses, several of which won prizes.
Helen is survived by two children, Mary Cody Gibson and husband, Wayne, of Rocky Mount, and Tim Cody and Helen Johnston of Moyock, NC. Also surviving are two grandchildren, William Gibson and Elizabeth Ann Gibson, both of Rocky Mount, and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her sisters, Virginia L. Groome, Elizabeth L. Good, Louise L. Rogers, and Mary Nell Leatherwood and her brothers, Robert Lee Leatherwood, III and Thurman Joe Leatherwood.
The family wishes to extend special appreciation to Drs. Leslie and David Browder for their care and concern for Helen. They also are especially grateful for all the care and comfort given by Sarah Heenan, Executive Director of the Heart Center at Nash Health Care, and by the nurses on the 5th floor of Nash General Hospital during Helen's recent hospitalization.
Friends are welcome to drop by the home of Mary and Wayne Gibson at anytime. Services will be held at the Alamance Memorial Park at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, followed immediately by a visitation at the Best Western at 770 Huffman Mill Road in Burlington.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 or the Children's Home of NC, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville NC 27361.
