David Nimtz was born on March 15, 1819, in Germany, the child of Godfried Nimtz and Marie Schliepe. He married Anna Wegner in 1844 in Germany. They had nine children in 20 years. They immigrated to the United States on the ship Westphalia and arrived in New York in April 1881 with his wife Anna, his son Frederick and his daughter Eva. He died on July 3, 1901, in South Bend, Indiana, having lived a long life of 82 years, and was buried there.
