Actress. She moved with her family to Hollywood when she was very young. Discovered by D.W. Griffith, Bessie appeared in many movies in which her talents were wasted. Petite with a girlish face, she played mostly innocent young girls. However, the films she made did not elevate her to the utmost strata of fame that was acheived by other young starlets of that era, like Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Norma Talmadge, Mae Murray and Gloria Swanson. At the beginning of the sound film era she was able to cause a stir as a musical star at the end of the 1920s and at the beginning of the 1930s. She played in movies like "The Broadway Melody" for which she was nominated as best actress in a leading role, "Chasing Rainbows," "Conspiracy" and "See America Thirst." By 1931, her career in Hollywood was over. She moved to London where she specifically worked for the theater. From the 1950s she appeared both in American and English productions. Her well-known movies of these years include "The Barefoot Contessa," "Children of the Damned," "Isadora," and "Catlow."
