He was the son of William Michael Knott (1863-1930) and his wife Marietta, nee Coomes (1867-1949).

Roy married Lois Genevieve Dishman on October 2, 1917 in Daviess County, Kentucky. The couple had five children, four born in Kentucky and one in Michigan. The family moved to Detroit about 1929, where Roy died in 1951 of cancer.
