Gary died of fragmentation wounds to the head and body while waiting at a LZ for pick up when two incoming 122MM rockets hit and ignited a pile of ammunition that have been staged near the LZ, eight kilometers west southwest of Ca Lu Airfield, during Operation Scotland II.

He was the only son of August Chabert Jr and Gilda Mae Serpas. August died in 1971 and his mother remarried.
