Evan W. Brode, 88, of Sixth Street, Coaldale, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, in his home. He was the husband of Joan (Rickert) Brode, to whom he had been married 61 years.
Prior to retiring, he had been employed by General Motors, Linden, N.J., for 25 years. Previously, he had been employed, for 16 years, as a deep coal miner for the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company.
Born in Coaldale, he was a son of the late Frank J. and Margaret (Williams) Brode.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard.
He was a member of First Congregational Church, Coaldale.
A 1941 graduate of the former Coaldale High School, he was a member of the Coaldale American Legion.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Sharon, wife of the Rev. Dr. Wayne Benack of Jim Thorpe, Gayle, wife of Wayne Marquardt of Bethlehem, and Janet Brode of Coaldale; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank Brode; and two sisters, Blanche Valuck and Matilda Berk.
Service: Monday, 11 a.m., First Congregational Church, Coaldale, with the Revs. Wayne, Jeremy and Jesse Benack officiating. Interment, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Tamaqua. Call Sunday, 6-8 p.m., or Monday, 10-11 a.m., at the church. Contributions in his name may be made to the church. Online registry at www.zrgfuneralhomes.com.
