Lena is a daughter of John Halbedel, born November 13, 1842 in Basel, Switzerland, and died November 4, 1899 at his home in Five Creek Township, Clay County, Kansas. Her mother, Anna Mary Martin Halbedel, passed away January 1, 1868 in Marshall, Clark County, Illinois.

Soon after her mother's death, Lena came to Clay County Kansas, near Idana, with her father John from Illinois. Her father married Julia Ann Anthony, Lena's future husband Nathan's aunt.

Lena married Nathan Anthony in 1882, Clay County, Kansas. It is believed she died giving birth to her infant son.
