Died on Andrea Doria collision with the ship Stockholm. Grandson of Michael H. de Young, founder of the San Francisco Chronicle and de Young museum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, known world wide. Brilliant mind in mathematics, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Princeton. From very wealthy family on both sides, he was coming home with his wife and thirteen year old son from Madrid, Spain, where they were visiting his wife's family. He and his wife, were in a first class cabin at the front of the ship and their thirteen year old son, Peter, was in a cabin on the opposite side of the ship from his parents. Their cabin was in the direct line of impact. Survivors sought vainly to find the Thieriots and said when they finally pried open the door to their cabin after clearing away debris, they found it had been sheared completely off the ship and all they saw was the sea. Their son, Peter, was saved and did not perish with his parents. They were the parents of four young sons, Peter the oldest at thirteen. Pete worked at the San Francisco Chronicle, where he was very well liked and respected. He married the beautiful young socialite, Frances de Figueras, in New York City, just five days after Pearl Harbor in December, 1941. Pete and his wife Frances, were both only thirty five years old. He was survived by his brother, Charles, and a sister, Mrs. Stent of San Mateo, CA.
