BRUCEVILLE - Ruth M. (McClure) Ashby, 97, died at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.
She was born Sept. 15, 1906, in Bruceville, the daughter of Ralph L. and Elsie (Threlkeld) McClure.
She was a graduate of Bruceville High School, Vincennes University and the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music (now part of Butler University).
She was the former Society Editor of the Vincennes Sun-Commercial and won first-place writing awards from the National Federation of Press Women and Women's Press Club of Indiana for her cooking feature stories.
In addition to being an accomplished music teacher and accompanist, Mrs. Ashby was a longtime organist at several area churches, most recently at Bruceville United Methodist and Bruceville First Christian Church, where she was a member.
Mrs. Ashby was a great-great-granddaughter of Major William Bruce, the founder of Bruceville.
Her husband, Hugh V. Ashby, passed away in 1964.
