Civil War Union Army Officer. Entered service in the Union Army with a commission of Captain and commander of Company B, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 27, 1861. He led his company during the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campaign, and fought in the May 5th Battle of Williamsburg. After the fight he was promoted to Major of the regiment, replacing Major David Ryerson, who was killed in combat. He served in this duty until August 1862, when he resigned prior to the 2nd Bull Run Campaign. Over a year later he enlisted in the 35th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, receiving a commission of Lieutenant Colonel on September 21, 1863. He served with his new unit in General William T. Sherman's Army in Georgia, participating in the drive to and capture of Atlanta, the famed March to the Sea, and the final push through the Carolinas. During the latter campaign he was in command of his regiment when it's Colonel, John J. Cladek, exercised brigade command. He was mustered out of Federal service in August 1865, but not before receiving a brevet of Colonel, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious services in the field".
