Officer Espinoza and his partner officer Parker were working as plain clothes undercover officers at San Francisco's Bayview District, as they recognized a suspicious man standing on the corner of Newcomb Avenue and Newhall Street. The officers spoke to the man for a brief moment, when the man suddenly produced an AK-47 assault rifle and started to discharge it at the officers, which resulted in officer Espinoza's death a few hours later. Officer Parker was treated and released for the injuries he sustained from the shooting. The suspect was later apprehended after a large manhunt.
