Son of Alexander and Mary (Cawley) McArthur he was born in Glasgow, emigrated to America where he was a ship's broker maintaining offices on Wall Street in Manhattan. His wife and he raised their family in Brooklyn. Only three of their children reached adulthood. John Alexander MacArthur the eldest, the middle of these, Cawley, died and was buried in Liverpool and Renfrew Douglas MacArthur.
