Mary "Mollie" Muse, daughter of Robert Muse and the former Miss Jane McKell, was born in Starkville, Mississippi on the 14th day of June 1858. Her parents were early settlers to the Starkville area in 1838 and charter members of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of that community. Mollie was the youngest of eight children.

Mollie was educated at the Starkville Classic school and attended the Winnsboro Female Institute a boarding school for the education of young ladies in Winnsboro, South Carolina.

On February 23th 1876, Mollie married John H. Alston, son of Dr. John H. Alston and the former Miss Virginia Rebecca Sills of Starkville. The wedding was at the brides home and officiated by Rev. David Pressly. John and Mollie moved to Mobile, Alabama shortly after their wedding and started a family, and had four children:
Alma Laura {m. Burton} (1877 - 1927)
John Muse (1886 - 1936)
Arthur Grey (1889 - 1927)
Virginia {m. Cunningham} (1899 - 1973)

After John Alston died in 1914, Mollie would later apply on June 21st 1928 for a Widow's pension for John's service during the Civil War in Company G, 15th Mississippi Infantry Regiment.

Mollie Muse Alston departed this life on the 23rd day of January 1938 at the home of her daughter Virginia in Palmerdale, Alabama. She is buried alongside her husband John, daughter Alma Alston Burton and two sons, John Muse and Grey Alston in Magnolia Cemetery.
